About Me

Hello everyone! Always been interested in genealogy.
Always good to see family gatherings. Good job ! :-)

After my General Certificate of Secondary Education
I got my commercial college degree
and went back to high school for my A-levels
then I finished my training period to be a Webdesigner
now I have been a self-employed Webdesigner for 4 years.

I have been raised and educated in Germany, but spent most of my vacations in Ireland with my relatives. My current residence is near to Frankfurt in Germany.
Address available on request. Have a nice day!

Thinking about Family trees

Unfortuately I never really spent a lot of time living with my Irish relatives. Maybe just about a month of visits; spread out over a year, for a couple of families, during holidays; had to do! So came the time with Mickey and Phyllis from Tullintuppen, Balligear at wich I could not resist to keep bugging them with questions for a whole week. I started worrying, that this load of questions in my mind might turn into sudden torture to the absorptive, but fortunately they were very happy that I was there to show some interest on family history.
Well, as stated above, this took me about one week, but to the end of that week I got my family kinda sorted out into an unprintable/[conventionally-]unreadable format with over 80 people. luckily for me I was BIG TIME into [database developing for front- and backend]. I just kept expanding my development during the late night to fit the needs of upcoming questions for the next round of speeches of the next day. I guess it was work or something, that, in the end, made me give up continuing this - odysee - because then suddenly birdies started to twitter around plans and got my posibilities to suddenly multitpy my relatives severly into dizzyness. Yes, possibilities; because I could not dedicate my work-time back then into souch a huge project worth a couple of months -time and -money. "What's on your mind?", it asked me ... well, basically this is it! This is what I throw out there into the open for you folks for now.
If someone wants to get back to me about this there seems to be the possibility for poping me by some mail over this sites massaging system - alltough it might take some time for me to get back to you; as OFINNERTY may affirm, sendig me the "please fill in a member profile" thrice, until I actually did ;-) ... So, yeah - nice site, great project - Thanks for you attention. Take care! Alec.

About Me

I am presently retired and living in Georgia. I grew up in Northern New Jersey and Upstate N.Y.. I have been working on 4 family histories since 2006 and the Finnerty family is the one I am still trying to complete. My great-great-grandfather, Stephen Finnerty arrived in the US from Galway in 1847. He settled in the Scranton, PA  area and he was a miner by trade.

Prior to 1847, the only information we have is that he was from either Galway or Roscommon. There seems to be very little information prior to that so I still have a lot of work ahead of me.

About Me

I am researching the Finnertys or Feenaghtys in my family. They lived around the area of Tully in Kilcorkey. My great grandfather was Thomas Finnerty b. 18 March 1880. His wife was Brigid Concannon b. 9 November 1887. They married 12 February 1914 in Castlerea Church. His siblings were John b. 13 August 1877, William b. 27 March 1875, Winifred b. 26 July 1873 and Mary Jane b. 24 June 1871. Mary Jane married Cormac Brennan. Winifred married Michael Kelly.

Their parents were James Feenaghty b. 24 April 1823 from Tully and Brigid McDonagh b. 1844 from Bellanagare. They married on 13 June 1870. James died 1 August 1911. James's siblings were Sarah b. 1842, Mary and Dominic Feenaghty. Sarah married Michael Connor on 14 May 1866. Dominic married Anne Ford on 2 April 1877.

Their parents were William Feenaghty and Jane Knott. William was born 25 February 1788 and died 28 January 1871. Jane was born in 1801 and died on 13 January 1881. Williams's parents were James Feenaghty and Mary Giblin.

My line of Finnertys are buried in Baslick cemetery. Many of their siblings are also buried there.

Family name is Finnerty:  My oldest paternal great grand parents were John Finnerty and Bridget Keone. Their marriage record is in the St. Laurence Parish records for Tynagh [Tine] village which lies just southeast of Loughrea in southeast Galway. John and Bridget would have been born in the late 1700s. Family tradition holds they moved to Barnaculla an area a couple of miles north of Tynagh. Johns son Thomas Finnerty married Catherine Whelan in the St. Laurence church. There are still Whelans in the Barnaculla area, however no Finnertys or Keones, The Whelans of Tynagh pronounce their name as in "wheel" not "whey." There were numerous Finertys recorded in marriages and baptisms and as sponsors, recorded in the Tynagh records. The name is recorded as both Finnerty and Finerty, and became Finnerty in the USA. John and Bridget did not migrate during the famine, however all the sons and daughters migrated to Clinton MA, USA and some worked in the woolen mills. Son James remained in Clinton and I have his family records. Sons John and Thomas married in Clinton and they and their sisters migrated to the Red Granite region in the Northwest Territory, now Wisconsin where they became farmers. John remained in the Red Granite/Green Lake region, however my ancestor Thomas migrated to new lands in Iowa where they homesteaded land and one grandson as I recall became a county sheriff in Iowa. My ancestors descend from Thomas and later migrated to Dakota Territory and homsteaded land in what is the state of South Dakota.  They had extremely hard lives and survived the drougth, famine and the Great Depression, also known as the Dust Bowl.  Most were farmenrs, however two of Thomas' sons also became a county sheriffs, one in Minnesota and one in South Dakota.

If your name is not Finnerty or a variant, who is your nearest Finnerty relative? Examples would be: My maiden name was Finnerty. May fathers name was Finnerty, My maternal grandmother was a Finnerty.

My mother's maiden name was Finnerty. Her father was Thomas Finnerty, b 1898, grandfather Edward Finnerty, b 1862, great grandfather Thomas Finnerty b 1816, great great grandfather John (m- 1911 Bridget, Biddy Keone/Keoghn) Finnerty.

My background is the same as that reported on the profile information for Richard OFinnerty. My family also originated in the Tynagh/Barnaculla area in Galway. I'm also a descendant of Thomas Finnerty, son of John and Bridget (Keoghn) Finnerty. Thomas migrated to the Dakota Territory in what is now South Dakota. Edward, my great grandfather, moved into central Minnesota.  There are several living family members in the midwest, USA.

Betty Finnerty, CA,  indicated that one of the oldest brothers (either John or Thomas), sons of John and Bridget (Keone) Finnerty went to the village to sell a pig, and instead of bringing the money back to the family he booked passage to America (Boston). The other siblings in the family (one by one, 8 in all counting the first to arrive) were sent money for passage to America, until all had come. Betty thought they came in the the 1840's.

I have some copies of pictures of the "old" family...
